Adelina's Eternal Return Arneis is drawn from a few measly rows rooted in the Bowe Lees vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, 390 metres above sea level. If you like your Arneis in the crisp, delicate, almondy apéritif guise, look away now: Arneis means "little rascal" in the Piedmontese dialect and this textural savoury rendition of site and grape lives up to that name. With creamy lime and apple-fresh fruit, and a chewy, phenolic-edged grip to finish off, there is nothing simple or sedate about this delicious wine. In spite of the extract-rich palate (given even more sustain by 12% spontaneous fermentation in neutral oak), the wine remains zingy and super refreshing, encouraging you to have another glass, ad infinitum.

    Producer

The Gardner family has owned the Spring Farm Estate, which is the site of both the Adelina winery and vineyards, since 1986. Prior to the inception of Adelina Wines in 2000, the property was managed by Will and Elaine Gardner, and the fruit was sold to Tim Adams. In 2002, Col McBryde and Jen Gardner, Will and Elaine’s daughter, took over responsibility for the vineyards and launched Adelina wines which are made exclusively from the Estate vineyards. The pair has been involved in winemaking and research since the mid-90s.

    Region

South Australia’s Clare Valley, besides being one of Australia’s prettiest wine regions, is ground-zero for Riesling and a large selection of the countries finest examples. Approximately 120km north of Adelaide, the Clare Valley boasts a great diversity of soil types and a number of famous sub-regions along its length such as Polish Hill River, Watervale, Leasingham, Sevenhill and the Skillogalee Valley. Clare Valley Riesling is vivid in its purity, always having a reputation for being very precise and driven, though in recent times, we are seeing some producers play with skin contact and seasoned oak adding to the regions interest. It isn’t only white varieties that shine in the Clare with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz do particularly well and it is the home of the stellar red wines of Australian wine royalty, Wendouree. Local Knowledge: The breakfast ramen at ‘`Seed’ in Clare with a glass of German Kabinett Riesling is a stroke of genius.

It’s hard to believe that 2019 is nearly over. I suspect that as you get older, the years pass more quickly. Something to do with percentage of one revolution around the sun to time spent on the planet to date. I’m turning 50 next year, so I have a vested interest in staying in 2019. And on that cheery note… They do a good job of Arneis at Adelina, and most often it’s way less greasy, and tighter than many of its Italian comrades. A little bit floral, raw almond, bitter lemon and the like, with a chalky texture, good energy, lightness of frame, and a crunchy textured finish of fine length. It’s a yes from me.
