The safest bet, in Australian wine, is that Punt Road/Airlie Bank is going to over-deliver for value and quality. Here is a superb dry Sauvignon Blanc from Tim Shand and his team. A deliciously refreshing wine, subtle in tropical and herbaceous flavours and soft in feel. It then finishes clean and wonderfully fresh. Perfect for the price.

    Producer

Tim Shand heads a dynamic, progressive young winemaking team at this James Halliday five star-rated winery. Punt Road is a standard-bearer for wines of character, drinkability and a clear, proud Yarra Valley stamp. It has history on its side and cards stacked in its favour for a very bright future. The property was founded on site of the St. Huberts Vineyard planted in the 1860s by Paul and Hubert de Castella - some of the first vines in the Yarra Valley and one of the cornerstones of Australian fine-wine tradition. Punt Road owners the Napoleone family took advantage of a tremendous head start when they planted vineyards here in the 1980s. All these years later, Tim and the team bring restless perfectionism to this intimately understood site and its mature vines. The Punt Road wines have never been better.* Cellarhand

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

Yarra Valley Sauvignon Blanc is one the varieties the Yarra Valley does best, which of course makes sense being Cabernet Sauvignon’s Mum. Passionfruit, thistle, fennel, bright and cool line, frisky and crunchy, juicy tinned grapefruit segments and passionfruit tingle on a nice long finish. Goes down a treat. Fresh!
