    Alain Graillot Croze-Hermitage 2017

The 2017 is an archetypal Graillot Crozes from a great year. Expect a wine brimming over with spicy, smoky, dark cherry and fresh berry fruit and with finer, more sculpted structure than we were expecting from this often robust vintage. It's packed with sophisticated ripe fruit, yet there's a coolness of texture and a savoury, sappy edge, leading to a powdery finish that lingers with sustained cherry, black tea and cool, resinous notes. A very classy release that has something for everyone.

Alain Graillot has the sort of vineyard that makes the wine traveller thirsty. It is the kind of place that simply looks like it makes great booze. Gnarled yet well-manicured vines reach up from a sea of smooth, rolled stones, each about the size of a child’s fist. At chez Graillot, the vineyards run deep with such stones, some 30m deep. It’s the kind of rocky terrain that is common in the Southern Rhône but far less so in the north. You only have to look at it to see that this was once an ancient river bed. The stones are in fact of Alpine origin, left behind when the nearby Isére River changed course in some ancient era. Anyway, it’s always refreshing when the wines live up to the scenery and round at Alain’s place, they really do.

Alain's eldest son Maxime Graillot - the senior winemaker at Domaine Alain Graillot, Maxime also has other wine projects outside of the family business.

The Rhône Valley, in France's south, is a geographically large and diverse region which is home to some of the most famous wines in the world. The Rhone river cuts through this beautiful landscape until it meets the mediterranean sea after travelling through the extraordinary wilderness of the Camargue. From the broadest perspective the Rhone Valley is divided into 2 areas the Septentrional & Meridional. The northern Septentrional area produces far less wine in terms of volume but it punches well above its weight when it comes to quality, and yields are exclusively Syrah. The south is much more varied in terms of grape-production, more often than not, Grenache is the chosen crop and Red wines dominate production across the Valley as a whole.
