Scents of faint cherry, light raspberry, a whiff of tomato and bay leaf, just the faintest old spice cupboard note too. Succulent, crisp texture, flighty red cherry flavours, a splash of blood orange, a touch of bitterness in the best possible way and a long trail of cool, refreshing acidity follows. It’s no rosé but it’s a couple of evolutionary steps up the adaptation curve. This is excellent to drink, vibrant and bright, shapely and, curiously, quite refined in its feel.

I believe the mix is cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot in an 80/20 split respectively (some pinot noir makes its way in too, allegedly). And picked pretty early. And nothing added, including no sulphur. That being said, it’s not lacking flavour, though the colour technocrats might gawk at the pale garnet hue. I think it’s charming and cheery. It’s a very fresh feeling, breezy light red, but still holds structure and shape, which is in the mind’s eye of winemaker Tom Belford.

A great expression of Yarra red wine here. So worthy.
