Such a wonderful red wine. So more-ish, so brightly flavoured and so easy to drink. A traditional southern French blend of Grenache (70%), Shiraz (20%) and Mataro (9%) with just a tiny touch of Counoise dropped in the mix (let’s call it 1%). Sourced from old vines, picked by hand, the fruit was gently handled in the winery and aged in old French oak. Bondar tend to pick as early as they can for this wine so that they can create a very fresh, bright wine, with red fruits and lovely herbal characters. There’s a life to the palate, a nerve, a tension as well which elevates the intentionally light palate to a more serious place. The blend is put together with the idea that Grenache really is the hero, with Shiraz adding supporting flesh and the Mataro spice and structure/tannin. You'll try one bottle and you're almost certain to buy more. So good.

    Producer

Bondar are a little family wine company run by winemaker Andre Bondar and his wife Selina Bondar. Possibly the two nicest people in South Australia. Making wines from their favourite regions McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills, their home is the iconic Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. With a philosophy of making wines that are lighter, brighter, more savoury, structured and intriguing, they have producers some of the most delicious Australian wines released in the last 5 or so years. Well farmed, well made, supremely bright and flavorsome - these wines we get excited about sharing.

    Region

In just 30 minutes drive from Adelaide CBD you will find yourself in the heart of McLaren Vales vineyards. It has a rich, vinous history that harks back to the mid-1800s and its Mediterranean climate and diversity of soil types are perfect for an enviable array of grape varieties. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are well suited, as are the many white and red Italian varieties that ‘end with o’ but the star of the show is undisputedly Grenache and Australia’s finest examples come from the old bush-vines that dot the sandy, rolling hills of ‘The Vale’. Producers such as Yangarra, S.C. Panell, Toby Bekkers, Aphelion and Willunga 100 produce excellent examples and a few producers such as Jauma and Ochota Barrels swoop down from the Adelaide Hills to take advantage of the regions incredible Grenache resources. Local Knowledge: A visit to the mind-boggling Cube at d’Arenberg and a beer at the Victory Hotel and you’ll be in a happy place. Willunga Farmers Markets is a beauty too.

This blend of 70% grenache, 20% shiraz, 9% mataro and 1% counoise comes from a patchwork of blocks, mainly estate, and mainly grown on sand. The burst of acidity is a blessing, not bane. It's true that grenache and shiraz do all the heavy lifting, but the impact of the mataro (and even the 1% counoise) add shade to the bright sunny flavours of the wine.
