This is a striking wine that reflects both the superb Grand Cru vineyards from which it is sourced (Ambonnay and the surrounds), as well as the meticulous viticulture and winemaking of the perfectionist that is, Francis Egly. It's made up of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from low yielding vines (in Grand Cru terroirs) that have been harvested fully ripe. Natural fermentation with wild yeasts only and the first period of maturation (before going to bottle) lasts almost one year with the wine remaining on its fine lees for the whole time. The wines clarify slowly and naturally, as was once typical across the region, and as such, there is no fining nor filtration. At least 50% of the wine is fermented and aged in oak casks and the dosage is tiny, around 2 g/L, so again, well within Extra Brut territory. If Egly made only this wine, he would still be one of the superstars of the Champagne region. It's a wine that puts to shame many a prestige cuvée at double the price.

    Producer

Run by Francis Egly, this producer has become a cult Champagne for devotees around the world. This is the reward for very hard work in the vineyards and meticulous attention to detail. Egly-Ouriet is in Ambonnay, with vineyards also in Bouzy and Verzenay. They also own a remarkable plot of old vine Pinot Meunier at Vrigny, which is vinified separately. Apart from Vrigny, these are all 100 per cent Grand Cru, Pinot Noir areas. As such, the wines are Pinot dominant, rich and powerful with deep colours, hedonistic aromas and explosive, layered personalities in the mouth. If you have never tasted the wines of this producer, be prepared for wines that have nothing to do with traditional Champagne styles. Egly-Ouriet is also famous – at least in France – for their Ambonnay Rouge, a 100 per cent Pinot Noir dry red. Another point of difference is that Egly-Ouriet lists on their back labels the amount of time each wine was aged on lees and when it was disgorged. Egly-Ouriet is one of Robert Parker’s 13 top ‘five-star’ Champagne houses, along with Krug, Bollinger, Salon and other mostly well-known names. Like Larmandier-Bernier and Selosse, Egly-Ouriet has been rated as one of Champagne’s top five producers by Andrew Jefford in his celebrated work, The New France, [Mitchell Beazley].

    Region

Champagne is a region that has undergone profound change in the last few decades. We are finally treating it as a wine instead of a celebratory splurge, the farming has improved exponentially and the explosion of grower Champagnes has lead to increased diversity of style across the region. Of course the ‘Grand Marques’ remain and their prestige cuvees still command a premium, but at the grower end of the spectrum, great purity and value can be found wherever you look. It has always been a region where blending across different vineyards to achieve a house style had been refined to an artform, despite the profundity of Krug’s Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, many Champenois consider their Grand Cuvee to be their greatest wine. That said, today we are seeing an increasing number of single-vineyard wines and the deep-dive into the regions terroir such as the exciting Côteaux Sud d'Epernay continues. Local Knowledge: A visit to Jacques Selosse and a meal at their restaurant, ‘Les Avisés’ is akin to a religious experience.
