Laherte's entry Champagne continues its skywards trajectory (like all of this producer's wines). The current release is comfortably the finest Ultradition shipped in to Australia yet. It was disgorged in April 2018 and was made from both biodynamic and organically reared fruit.
The blend remains 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir from a total of seven different parcels across the Côteaux Sud d'Épernay and Vallée de la Marne, namely Chavot, Mancy, Morangis, Le Breuil, Boursault, Moussy and Vaudancourt. The average age of the vines is 30 years.
This is simply a top value grower wine; bright, pure and juicy with loads of delicious, red currant and apple skin Meunier fruit and a punchy, mineral close. The quality being delivered for this price is outstanding. Bright, appley and fragrant, this feels fresh and easy to drink, buttressed by taut, lively acidity.

    Producer

The wines of Laherte Frères are unique and exciting due to the young Aurèlien Laherte, since he joined his family’s Estate in 2002 he has now taken full control of the vineyards and the cellars. They are based in Chavot, where most of their vines are situated, but they also have some parcels in other villages of the Coteaux Sud area as well some tiny holdings in the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley. In total they have some 10 hectares broken up into an amazing 75 parcels. The vineyard practices at Laherte Frères are impressive. Most of the Estate is biodynamically farmed with the exception of those vineyards that are too far away to do so (mainly those in the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley). These latter sites are still managed organically, with the soils cultivated and no herbicides or pesticides used. The high standards continue in the cellar. Aurèlien uses the traditional Coquard wooden Champagne presses. He has two of these (very unusual for an Estate of this small size), which allows him to press more quickly and also to keep small parcels separate. The wines are moved only by gravity. Fermentation occurs with natural yeast and more than 80 percent of the wine is fermented and matured in large foudres and old barriques (many 10+ years of age), as all Champagne once was pre the 1950s. This focus on terroir expression, the use of traditional barrel ageing to help the wines express themselves, the meticulous viticulture along with the unique terroir of the Coteaux d’Épernay, are the keys to understanding these expressive and delicious wines.

    Region

Champagne is a region that has undergone profound change in the last few decades. We are finally treating it as a wine instead of a celebratory splurge, the farming has improved exponentially and the explosion of grower Champagnes has lead to increased diversity of style across the region. Of course the ‘Grand Marques’ remain and their prestige cuvees still command a premium, but at the grower end of the spectrum, great purity and value can be found wherever you look. It has always been a region where blending across different vineyards to achieve a house style had been refined to an artform, despite the profundity of Krug’s Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, many Champenois consider their Grand Cuvee to be their greatest wine. That said, today we are seeing an increasing number of single-vineyard wines and the deep-dive into the regions terroir such as the exciting Côteaux Sud d'Epernay continues. Local Knowledge: A visit to Jacques Selosse and a meal at their restaurant, ‘Les Avisés’ is akin to a religious experience.
