2016 was an excellent year for Bordeaux and so it was for Le Puy. This 2016 is darker fruited than the 2015 vintage with attractive garnet colour and purplish hues. The nose is complexed with blueberry, cassis and redcurrant with hints at sous-bois and gravel. In 2016 the wine is extra quality, still medium-bodied it is very precise, with fine tannins paving the way for a very long and complex finish. A wine of great finesse, sensual in its youth but also with the potential to age and grow for several decades, revealing the full depth and character of this superb terroir. The epitome of elegance and refinement, this 2014 will cellar to advantage for 30-40 years!

"Just east of Pomerol and St.-Émilion, sits Château le Puy, where the Amoreau family has grown grapes for more than 400 years...the French have a term, ""digestibilité"", begins with deliciousness, but it also indicates wines that are easy to drink without weighing heavily in the gut. It’s an immediate, unmediated pleasure that nonetheless may be complex and contemplative. Enter Chateau Le Puy, an estate that produces superb Bordeaux that epitomizes the notion of digestibilité. As with the best Bordeaux wines, those of Le Puy are marked by purity, precision, lightness and drinkability that encourages taking another sip. They also have an intensity of flavor despite their grace, a combination more often associated with that other great region in the east of France."" - Eric Asimov, The New York Times, June 2017

Jean-Pierre Amoreau and his son Pascal make very pure and equisite Bordeaux wine from their estate of fifty hectares of old vines in the Bordeaux 'Côtes de Francs' region. The estate is planted mostly to Merlot but also has plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carmenère. For white wine, only Semillon is used. Jean-Pierre is the 15th generation of family winemakers at Château le Puy which is located between Saint Emilion and Saint Cibard and it is on the same plateau as Saint Emilion and Pomerol. The vineyards are 110 meters above sea level and the soil consists of a venerable mix of clay, flint and limestone.

Château le Puy is certified Biodynamic by Demeter and the approach to making the wines is admirable and similar to many of the other estates we import. Grapes are brought in to the winery whole and un-crushed; they are then fermented using indigenous yeasts with little or no sulfur dioxide to preserve them.

A hat tip to history. Horses still plowing the vineyard at Château le Puy.

Bordeaux remains the benchmark for high-end and much sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based blends, often with a price tag to match. There are 57 appellations across the region making Bordeaux the largest producer of appellation wines in France. It is a region delineated by waterways; the famous Cabernet blends of the left bank lie on the Atlantic side of the Gironde and Garonnne rivers and the famous merlot-based wines of the right bank lie to the right of the Dordogne river where it feeds into the Gironde. The area between these two famous regions is known as the Entre Deux Mers - ‘between two seas’. The stunning, complex white wines of Bordeaux produced from oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and the incredible heady dessert wines from Barsac and Sauternes cement the region as a classic. Under the surface lies value and a fledgling natural wine scene too so it’s not just for the well-heeled. Local Knowledge: If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to the €30,000 a bottle asking price for the newly released, Graves-based 2015 Liber Pater investigate wines from Bordeaux et Entre-Deux-Mers, Côtes de Bourg, Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac and Côtes de Blaye.
