The Muscadet "Gabbro" has clay soils and vines planted between 1950 and 1960; it's the larger of the two and produces a softer, more generous wine - still briny, steely and mineral, it has an attractive green apple flavour and is deliciously thirst quenching.

Jérôme Bretaudeau, has been making wines of distinction for the best part of three decades, working for local vineyards around Loire for 15 years, most notably at Domaine de la Louvetrie, prior to finally scraping enough money and equipment together to go out on his own in 2005.

His eight hectares in Muscadet Sèvre et Maine are over two plots, the first larger plot is on clay with vines planted in the 1950's. The wines show minerality, saline and ferrous characters to complement the crisp apple fruit - a wonderful accompaniment to another local produce favourite, Oysters from the nearby Atlantic sea.

The second plot is on granite with vines dating back to 1920; the wines from here tend to show more intense mineral and flint but with delicate floral notes, very linear in nature, yet all encompassing and sumptuous. If you want to sum up 'terroir' to an inquisitive mind, a glass from one of these vines could be a simple yet very accurate explanation.

Jérôme harvests by hand, yielding as little as 35hl/ha, the average for region is nearer 90hl/ha so this really is a labour of love. Interestingly he harvests by age of vine & soil type. A way if understanding what each vine brings to the bottle as they mature. Very much in tune with the land, farming practices are organic and his winemaking respectful of tradition.

At the heart of France, the Loire Valley is an area with distinct variation between the five wine producing regions. Beginning in the West towards the Atlantic sea and moving progressively eastwards the first region for discussion is The Pays Nantais which has been producing wines since Roman times and typically famous for Muscadet. Further east is Anjou which is notable for the production of Chenin Blanc based wines such as Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume. Saumur lies in the centre of this east-west axis and is the home of Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc red wines. Further on we arrive at Touraine, famed for but not limited to Vouvray as the region also produces notable Gamay and Sauvignon Blanc. Lastly, the Centre-Loire which is notable for Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé.

    Food Pairings & Recipe

    Food Pairing

    Freshly Shucked Oysters

    Oysters with Lemon and Tabasco

2 dozen fresh Oysters in their shells

    1-2 whole Lemons

    Tabasco sauce (optional)

    Sea Salt (optional)

Large serving dish with crushed ice

This dish is as simple as it gets but your oysters should be as 'boat fresh' as possible.

Carefully shuck the oysters taking care to not get any splintered shell in half shell that contains the oyster. Loosen the oyster using clean short knife. Cut the lemons into wedges.

Arrange the oysters on your serving dish of ice with the lemon wedges.

Let your guests serve their own Tabasco as desired. Enjoy with a cold bottle of matched white wine.
