From the importer - "this is by some distance the finest Bourgogne Rouge we have shipped from this producer and, as a matter of fact, in general."
This is drawn from two Estate-owned sites on the southern reaches of Chassagne, nearby Chagny and Remigny. The soils here are the classic clay and limestone of the Côte and the vine age is 35 years on average. The grapes are handpicked and mostly destemmed before being naturally fermented and aged for 12 months on lees in a mix of steel vats and used large barrels. For structure and perfume, Pillot employed 20% whole bunches this year and the result is pretty as a peach. Expect a vibrant yet fleshy Pinot with loads of dark and red cherry fruit, classy resinous, spicy oak and inky depths. The finish is perfumed and long with a twist of ferrous tannins. A lovely, lovely wine. Buy what you can. Red Burgundies of this quality and at this price range are indeed a rarity!

    Producer

After several consecutive vintages of producing outstanding wines, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Thierry Pillot is a top-flight talent. If you haven’t tried the wines, you should." Allen Meadows, Burghound, Issue 41.

Thierry Pillot is starting to hit his groove, driving the wines of his family Domaine to greater and greater heights. With each vintage the wines here get purer, more refined and, well, just better. Thierry is great friends with Vincent Dancer, Marc Bachelet, Arnaud Mortet and many of the other young guns of Burgundy. He is part of a revolution that has been sweeping through the Côte d’Or - a zeitgeist being driven by a new generation. The wines of his father were always good, in no small part due to the quality of the holdings. However it is strikingly clear to us, and regular visitors like Allen Meadows, that this invigorated address has well and truly kicked up another gear and now bears comparison with the very best that Chassagne has to offer. There is a purity and clarity to these wines that many of the better known Chassagne Domaines cannot match. There are better known Chassagne names here, as they have been imported for longer and there is more wine, but don’t make the mistake of assuming that because you are more familiar with these other names that the wines are better. They ain’t.

The young and dynamic Thierry Pillot who is making some of the most exciting wines in the Côte de Beaune.

    Region

The first visit to the hallowed ground of Burgundy is a special one. The region is the high-altar to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and stretches from the outer suburbs of Dijon to Macon in the south at the northern border of Beaujolais. The vivid Chardonnay wines of Chablis are an outlier, situated some 105km to the north-west of Dijon on stark kimmeridgian” limestone. The hallowed ground of the Côte-d'Or is neatly split in two by the town of beaune. To the north lies the Côte de Nuits, home to 24 Grand Cru vineyards; Pinot Noir rules here. To the south of Beaune lies the Côte de Beaune where Chardonnay plays a more dominant role with seven of the eight Grand Cru vineyards producing white wine. Value is to be found further south in the appellations of Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais. Local Knowledge” A meal at Ma Cuisine in Beaune is a must or visit Beaune markets, stock up on provisions and have a picnic at the ‘secret’ picnic table above the famous ‘Cros Parantoux’ vineyard in Vosne-Romanée.
