Dense plums, blackberries and hints of cedar and vanilla leap out of the glass. The rich firm palate is balanced with grainy mouth coating tannin and fresh sweet mulberries that glide across the mouth. Savoury black olives and refreshing acidity provide a very long finish. This elegant yet opulent Cabernet reflects both the outstanding vintage conditions and the meticulous care taken in the vineyard and the winery. A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec.

Hunter Smith has a Bachelor of Business (Agricultural Management) degree from Marcus Oldham College in Victoria and became a full-time member of the Frankland Estate team in 1999. He is involved in every aspect of the winery operations including finance and marketing and is also responsible for managing the family’s wool growing interests. He shares winemaking duties with brother-in-law Brian Kent, who developed an interest in winemaking during a stint in London, where he worked at Majestic Wines. He went on to complete a postgraduate degree in Viticulture and Oenology from Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zealand. In 2003, after his first vintage in Frankland River, Brian worked vintage in Russian River, a sub-region of the Sonoma Valley in California. In 2005 he completed another harvest in Rías Baixas in northwest Spain. Then, after six years of making wine in Frankland River, he joined the family business at Frankland Estate.

Part of the overarching ‘Great Southern’ wine region in southern Western Australia, Frankland River is one of Australia’s best-kept secrets but not for long. It lies some 250km to the east of Margaret River amongst flourishing farmlands and the ironstone-rich gravel and sandy loams provide the perfect medium for Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a relatively young region, the first vineyards being planted in 1968 but it has quickly forged a reputation for excellent wines. Riesling and Shiraz excel and wineries such as Frankland Estate, Alkoomi and Ferngrove forged the regions reputation with many wineries from other Great Southern and Margaret River wineries now sourcing fruit from the region. The lo-fi crew love it here too with Express Wine Makers, Brave New Wine ND La Violetta all producing delicious, crunchy wines from Frankland River vineyards. Local Knowledge: Albany is a great place to base yourself when touring the Great Southern wine region. Make sure you visit Liberté Wine Bar which would be a hit in any capital city. Try the legendary garlic crab noodles.
