Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With an inclination of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil.
Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green), 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

    Producer

Georg Breuer was founded in 1880 by Peter Breuer, partner of the venerable German wine shipping firm Scholl & Hillebrand. It then passed to Peter's son Georg and then grandsons Bernhard and Heinrich upon Georg's death in 1978. The shipping firm was sold and during the 1980s and 1990s Bernhard and Heinrich carefully expanded the vineyard estate from 20 acres to its present 60 acres in the steepest, most well-drained vineyards of the Rheingau communes of Rüdesheim and Rauenthal. Bernhard Breuer was highly regarded internationally and worked tirelessly in defence of German viticultural integrity, earning credit for restoring Riesling's respectability in world markets and writing authoritative books on Germany's wine regions. Nowadays it's Bernhard's daughter Theresa who, alongside Hermann Schmoranz, honours her father's memory by faithfully living up to his ideals. Production follows a strict terroir-based hierarchy for the production of elegant, naturally dry wines made from healthy Riesling grapes, right up to Breuer's flagship crus: Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

    Region

The Rheingau is one of the most distinguished wine regions of the world. Moving from east to west, the fairly flat, dimpled landscape evolves into progressively steep slopes. It is a quietly beautiful region, rich in tradition. Early on, its medieval ecclesiastical and aristocratic wine-growers were associated with the noble Riesling grape and, in the 18th century, were credited for recognizing of the value of harvesting the crop at various stages of ripeness from which the Prädikate, or special attributes that denote wines of superior quality, evolved. Queen Victoria's enthusiasm for Hochheim's wines contributed to their popularity in England, where they, and ultimately, Rhine wines in general, were referred to as Hock. Two grape varieties predominate: the Riesling and the Spätburgunder. The former yields elegant wines with a refined and sometimes spicy fragrance; a fruity, pronounced acidity; and a rich flavor. The Spätburgunder wines are velvety and medium- to full-bodied, with a bouquet and taste often compared with blackberries.

Juicy and fresh-feeling wine, lemon-lime tang, crisp mineral edges, juiciness and general simplicity and drinkability. It’s a pretty simple kind of feel, understated perhaps, drinkability is high though, so is freshness. Easy to like this wine. Real easy.

The 2016 Rheingau Riesling Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg has a very clear, deep, pure and flinty bouquet of bright fruit and crushed stone aromas. This is absolutely fascinating in its purity, finesse and complex elegance. Round and terribly lush on the palate, with very fine tannins and ripe, crystalline acidity, this is a highly elegant, delicate and complex Riesling that is enormously filigreed yet tensioned and long. A goddess of the greatest finesse and elegance. The sweetness, body and minerality are in perfect balance.

Scents of white peach, lime and marjoram are accompanied by hints of ocean breeze and quarry dust. The silken palate brims with bright fruit accented by smoky, pungent green herbs and with a sense of crushed stone suffusion. The combination of palpable extract-richness with alcoholic levity (at 11.5%) is striking. The vibrant finish delivers a mouthwatering abundance of mineral salts and displays superb transparency to herbal, crystalline stony, slatey and smoky nuances.
