Uhlen wines tend to develop concentrated fruitiness with a characteristic echo of sturdy mineral content. Protected from wind in a depression of the cliffs and girdled by trees, the vineyard forms an open amphitheatre facing south. Uhlen Roth Lay measures only 4 hectares. The soil is quartzy, dark-red slate, streaked with a light red ochre layer.

    Producer

Reinhard Löwenstein views his craft as a creative interplay between climate, soil, vine and grower, culminating in wines that are singular, authentic and complex. The wines he makes with daughter Sarah never fall short on that count

    Region

The vineyards that cling on for dear life along the banks of Germany’s Mosel River are one of the most dramatic vistas in the world of wine. Riesling reaches lofty heights on the precipitous slopes and blue and red slate soils of this famous meandering waterway, accounting for 60% of the plantings in the region. Other varieties grown in the Mosel include Müller-Thurgau, Elbling, Kerner, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Dornfelder and Weißer Burgunder (Pinot Blanc). German wine law is notoriously abstruse but what you need the main action centres around wines designated Qualitatswein mit Prädikat (QmP). There are dry wines in the Qualitätswein designation (trocken, halbtrocken & Feinherb) but Prädikat wines ascend in levels of residual sugar from Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and the heady Trockenbeerenauslese & Eiswein. In recent decades, much work has been done on the Großes Gewächs (Grosses Gewächs) wines, a designation used to identify some of the finest dry white wines of Germany, all from Grosse Lage (Great Sites) the finest vineyard sites according to the German VDP classification system much like the Grand Cru designation in Burgundy. Local Knowledge: Stock up on provisions and vino and get off the main tourist trail and explore the roads the skirt above the vineyards. There are many incredible photo opportunities and picnic tables with knockout views and check out the two Michelin starred Schanz Restaurant in Piesport.
