At the end of Amery Rd sits a beautiful 80 acre property, established in the late 19th Century. The vineyards are surrounded by native bushland and are nestled amongst the forest, an important factor in moderating the climate. Home to three different soil types and a micro-climate that gives this property a unique geological and viticultural foot print.

The difficulty with great wine is describing it. The nuance and complexity seem almost out of grasp. It is an assault of many aromas and favours that sweep together in one fluid motion, bound in the Koomilya signature of split red wood and mahogany. Silky tannins play across the back palate, soft yet powerful, enveloping and supple with deep spice and cassis favours that surprise and delight.

The S.C. Pannell label was established by Stephen and wife Fiona in 2004, but Steve's journey to winemaking really dates back to 1969, growing up on one of Australia's most iconic boutique wineries, Moss Wood in Margaret River. From there the winegrower path was inevitable and lead to Chief Red Wine Maker at BRL Hardy via vintages in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Barolo and, Priorat. Based in McLaren Vale the role allowed Steve to form a unique bond with the Vale, it’s micro-climates, growers and, culture. Perhaps most importantly it is the Vale’s ability to produce dry-grown and environmentally sustainable Grenache, Tempranillo, Touriga and Shiraz that drives his passion & winemaking philosophy: A holistic approach that starts with climate and emphasises the importance of the vineyard, as well as wines relation to the food he loves to grow, cook and eat.

Steve Pannell in the McLaren Vale, never afraid to get his hands dirty in the vineyard.

In just 30 minutes drive from Adelaide CBD you will find yourself in the heart of McLaren Vales vineyards. It has a rich, vinous history that harks back to the mid-1800s and its Mediterranean climate and diversity of soil types are perfect for an enviable array of grape varieties. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are well suited, as are the many white and red Italian varieties that ‘end with o’ but the star of the show is undisputedly Grenache and Australia’s finest examples come from the old bush-vines that dot the sandy, rolling hills of ‘The Vale’. Producers such as Yangarra, S.C. Panell, Toby Bekkers, Aphelion and Willunga 100 produce excellent examples and a few producers such as Jauma and Ochota Barrels swoop down from the Adelaide Hills to take advantage of the regions incredible Grenache resources. Local Knowledge: A visit to the mind-boggling Cube at d’Arenberg and a beer at the Victory Hotel and you’ll be in a happy place. Willunga Farmers Markets is a beauty too.
