20 year old vines from the north east facing, granitic, (highly regarded) Denton Vineyard. 2019 was a warm dry year but fruit was all in great condition at harvest and Luke is really pleased with how it held it’s acidity and freshness. 100% whole bunch pressed. Cloudy juice fermented in tank and 2000 litre foudre. Wild ferment, wild malo, no temperature control, no fining , no filtration, matured in older French Oak foudre, minimal sulphur add at bottling.

    Producer

Without question one of the most gifted winemakers and exciting in Australia. Fortunately for all of us, he makes relatively inexpensive wines - incredible quality and detail for the price.
Refusing to slavishly follow the conventions and rituals of by-the-book winemaking, Luke Lambert crafts the kind of wine that we feel certain his vineyards would want him to make; deep, wholesome and 'far in'.
All Luke Lambert wines are handpicked and of single-vineyard origin. They are wildly perfumed with moderate alcohol, fresh acidities, powdery tannins, and limited oak influence. These are wines made as if the industrial revolution (in wine) was a figment of our collective imagination. Luke’s methodology includes wild ferments without the aid of temperature control, hand plunging, long macerations (with plenty of whole-bunch for the Syrahs), basket-pressing, gravity rather than pumping, old oak, and no fining or filtration. Lambert’s belief that "..the best wines have always been made by feel and are always sourced from unique and interesting vineyards that have natural balance and grow grapes full of character..." comes through strongly in the remarkable complexity and placeness of these wines.

Luke Lambert and a good mate having a well earned rest in the Yarra Valley winery.

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

Umami as ever, with a saline and nutty, almost sake-like character, but in with that, green apple, lemon zest, spice and a little trademark funk. Raw almonds, in texture as much as flavour, green apple crunch of acidity, chalky texture, a suggestion of ginger, and a long textured, dusty and citrus-laced finish of fine length. It’s a wine of unique personality and rare sophistication at its price point, and otherwise.
