    Matassa 'Blossom' 2018

A single vineyard bottling of skin contact old vine Muscat of Alexandria. The vineyard has cherry trees planted around it, hence the grapes grow near the blossoms. Organic farming, spontaneous fermentation with the native yeasts, no filtering or fining, and bottled without sulfites added. This is a rarity among Matassa's cuvées, with very limited availability. To drink, this is more subtle and somewhat delicate than other Matassa wines. Camomile, almonds and herbs on the nose. Hay, light tannins and orange citrus on the palate. A quick decanting helps show this wines flavour spectrum highlighted by citrus and stone fruits. Wonderfully soft and drinkable.

From the producer Tom Lubbe - "Our vineyards are worked naturally without any chemical aids; we are certified organic by Ecocert and I use biodynamic techniques such as Preparation 500 and various plant fermentations to activate and nourish my soil's 'life' (microbial activity). Depending on the site our vineyards are plowed by tractor, caterpillar tractor or by mule (about 5ha are worked by hand) in the interests of recreating a sustainable fertility of the soil. I also believe firmly in the old agricultural adage that the best fertilizer is the foot-prints of the owner.".

Tom Lubbe - New Zealand born, South African raised now Languedoc-Roussillon resident and winemaker-owner of Matassa.

To the very south, south-west of France and considered to be the largest wine region in the world, Languedoc produces a very wide variety of wines owing to the sheer diversity of soils and conditions. Ranging from Cabernet Sauvignon ( it's most widely planted variety) to Carignan, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Picpoul to name only a few. Picpoul has been growing in the Languedoc for centuries and is an exceptional accompaniment to seafood.  The region is comprised of four sub-regions the Pyrnees-Orientale, Herault, Gard & Aude.
