Chardonnay remains the premier white grape of the Yarra Valley. In seasons like 2017, we believe it can rival some of the best Chardonnays of the world. Our newest Chardonnay blocks are now approaching 10 years of age, adding an extra layer of clonal diversity to this wine when blended with our older plantings (now reaching 35-45 years of age). The nose of the 2017 Chardonnay opens with citrus characters, lemon curd, some riper melon nuances, along with struck match, toast, and almond meal. The palate is fine, elegant and pure with flavours of citrus, grapefruit, honey and some very appealing toasty oak complexities. The defining feature of this wine on release is the pristine acid line and tremendous length. While the palate shows ample generosity now, expect this wine to build concentration over the next few years as it relaxes a little in bottle.

    Producer

Mount Mary is one of the great small wineries of Australia, established by Dr. John Middleton in 1971. Production is tiny. Quality is of the highest tier found in Australia. Their vineyards, incredibly, produce several of the best wines made in Australia year after year. Astounding quality across the different grape varieties. This from James Halliday is great, and perfectly succinct, applause for the way Sam Middleton (3rd generation) is brilliantly crafting the current wines from this family estate - “It’s axiomatic that generational change can be good or bad, obvious or discreet. The changes at Mount Mary have been unambiguously good, but fittingly discreet”. It helps that the Middletons, fantastic people too, take what's in the bottle each year very seriously - they want drinkers of the Mount Mary wines to be thoroughly impressed by what they have purchased - a few decades of success on this front.

The Mount Mary Story: One Little Hill

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

I think the general release date is sometime around October, though best get these done quickly, as I’m off to Italy again on Friday. We don’t want that pesky Mattinson interfering with the rightful work of The Chardonnay Master™.

It’s a tight one in 2017, that’s for sure. Lime, lemon and lemon curd, vanilla yoghourt, almond, just a little stuck match. It’s racy but flavoursome, bites down pretty firmly, and doesn’t really let go. Intense quartz-like texture and juicy lime acidity pulses through citrus and tangy pineapple, the finish long and slightly spicy, all chalk and mouth-watering goodness. Hooray for Mount Mary Chardonnay.

There’s a complex, mealy and savory side here with a very assertive white-peach, mango and nectarine edge, too. The palate offers intense flavor with intense freshness and the grilled hazelnuts and peaches hold long. Drink now.
