John planted Pinot Noir at Mount Mary in 1971. The original block is 1.2 acres in size and contains more than 20 different Pinot clones. The clonal diversity provides such complexity and uniqueness to this wine. Put simply, there has never been a better year in the Yarra Valley for Pinot Noir than 2017. The nose opens with dominant primary fruit but reveals so many other complexities as the wine breathes in the glass. Stewed strawberries, raspberry, cherry and quince make way to beetroot, hints of marzipan, spice and dark chocolate. The palate is medium bodied but is defined by the underlying intensity and length of flavour. There is a fine grain of tannin that runs confidently through this wine, building power while also adding to the savoury characteristics. With its best years still well and truly ahead of it, this is a wine set to age beautifully in the cellar for another decade or more.

    Producer

Mount Mary is one of the great small wineries of Australia, established by Dr. John Middleton in 1971. Production is tiny. Quality is of the highest tier found in Australia. Their vineyards, incredibly, produce several of the best wines made in Australia year after year. Astounding quality across the different grape varieties. This from James Halliday is great, and perfectly succinct, applause for the way Sam Middleton (3rd generation) is brilliantly crafting the current wines from this family estate - “It’s axiomatic that generational change can be good or bad, obvious or discreet. The changes at Mount Mary have been unambiguously good, but fittingly discreet”. It helps that the Middletons, fantastic people too, take what's in the bottle each year very seriously - they want drinkers of the Mount Mary wines to be thoroughly impressed by what they have purchased - a few decades of success on this front.

The Mount Mary Story: One Little Hill

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

There’s much fuss and demand for Mount Mary Pinot Noir, and while it’s very good, my heart (and wallet) will always belong to Quintet. There’s a lot to get your nose around here, that’s for sure. Poached strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mint, spice, chocolate coated marzipan, dried roses, autumnal things, creamy cedar oak. It’s juicy and sweetly fruited, perfumed and succulent, tannin is buried but grips with graphite surety, acidity fresh and like just-picked berries and tangerines, silty and perfumed on the finish. It’s not backwards in coming forward, yet has a latent power and fragrance that will stand it in good stead with considerable bottle age. Excellent release.

A very plush and attractive Pinot from a great Yarra Valley vintage, this has an air of bright, lightly spicy and sappy cherry fruit, framed in supple, smooth-honed tannins. Drink or hold.
