Fruit from younger vines on a south-facing slope on the world-class Mount Mary vineyard. The winemaking methodology follows other Mount Mary white wines, where the fruit is pressed relatively hard to give the wine a phenolic texture - this is a good thing, add an extra, almost gastronomic, edge to the wines. Fermentation is conducted with a high solids component also for added complexity. All of this attention and detail have created, as with their top tier 'Triolet' white blend, one of the most outstanding dry whites made in Australia.

    Producer

Mount Mary is one of the great small wineries of Australia, established by Dr. John Middleton in 1971. Production is tiny. Quality is of the highest tier found in Australia. Their vineyards, incredibly, produce several of the best wines made in Australia year after year. Astounding quality across the different grape varieties. This from James Halliday is great, and perfectly succinct, applause for the way Sam Middleton (3rd generation) is brilliantly crafting the current wines from this family estate - “It’s axiomatic that generational change can be good or bad, obvious or discreet. The changes at Mount Mary have been unambiguously good, but fittingly discreet”. It helps that the Middletons, fantastic people too, take what's in the bottle each year very seriously - they want drinkers of the Mount Mary wines to be thoroughly impressed by what they have purchased - a few decades of success on this front.

The Mount Mary Story: One Little Hill

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

“I feel like we make wine better in the hard years, you have to think more, pay more attention, work a little more. Then take a look at ’15 and things just happened, but it was easy, and the wines were great but not as inspiring to me. The 2016 harvest was really good for cabernet and chardonnay, though we made Relfexion in 2016 too, but that was more about upping the quality of the Mount Mary”, offers winemaker Sam Middleton. Small parcels that didn’t make Triolet make this wine, predominately off younger vines here too. Oyster shells, citrus, citrus blossom, whiffs of vanilla. Comely perfume here. Fine and bright in the palate, quite slinky but also has a neat chalky edge. Very long too – pristine in flavours with just a hint of nutty savouriness. A delight. Totally.
