At first, the rich nose boasts notes of white flowers and freshly baked brioche aromas. As the wine warms in the glass, it exudes scents of dried fruits and toasted almonds and hazelnuts, combining with a hint of orange zest.
On the palate, the wine is immediately powerful and yet exquisitely well-balanced; refreshing flavours of citrus fruit, notably grapefruit, are coupled with creamy notes of pastry.
This wine combines the fullness of the much-celebrated 2008 vintage with the unparalleled and much-loved style of the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. A long, lingering finish indicates that this wine has fantastic ageing potential.

    Producer

The world famous Champagne house of Pol Roger is still owned and run by the descendants of Pol Roger himself. Located in the town of Épernay in the Champagne region of France. Pol Roger was born on 24 December 1831, the son of a lawyer. Beginning as a wholesaler of wine, he started his own champagne house in 1849, with the first release in 1853. He received an imperial and royal warrant for the Austro-Hungarian court.
The owners of Pol Roger are members of the Primum Familiae Vini. Pol Roger holds the current Royal Warrant as purveyors of champagne to Queen Elizabeth II.
The house's prestige label is the vintage Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill was oft to repeat Napoleon's maxim on champagne: "In victory, deserve it. In defeat, need it!".

    Region

Champagne is a region that has undergone profound change in the last few decades. We are finally treating it as a wine instead of a celebratory splurge, the farming has improved exponentially and the explosion of grower Champagnes has lead to increased diversity of style across the region. Of course the ‘Grand Marques’ remain and their prestige cuvees still command a premium, but at the grower end of the spectrum, great purity and value can be found wherever you look. It has always been a region where blending across different vineyards to achieve a house style had been refined to an artform, despite the profundity of Krug’s Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, many Champenois consider their Grand Cuvee to be their greatest wine. That said, today we are seeing an increasing number of single-vineyard wines and the deep-dive into the regions terroir such as the exciting Côteaux Sud d'Epernay continues. Local Knowledge: A visit to Jacques Selosse and a meal at their restaurant, ‘Les Avisés’ is akin to a religious experience.

One of the great Champagnes both for its richness and its longevity, this latest incarnation is superb. The wine's richness is linked to the ripe fruit and the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend. It also shines in the perfect balance between the texture, the minerality and the integration of the fruit. It can be enjoyed now, but it will be better from 2020 and then for many years to come.

Released in October of last year, Pol Roger's 2008 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of waxy citrus rind, dried white flowers, freshly baked bread, iodine and honeyed yellow apple. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and vinous, with a deep and multidimensional core, broad structural shoulders and considerable concentration, girdled by tangy acids and displaying a youthfully frothy but incipiently fine mousse. The finish is long and intense. This is a terrific rendition of this reliably superb cuvée and well worth seeking out.
