Pete Schell's Papillon was one of the first of the mod-Barossa wines to show that ripeness and depth of flavour needn't come at the expense of freshness and vineyard clarity. All these years later it remains at the very top of its game. If anything, it has never been in better form. Papillon is crafted from a range of old vine, dry grown Grenache (78%) and Cinsault (22%) vineyards, located in the east and far northern reaches of the Barossa Valley. The average age of these low yielding vines today sits at 90 years old.
It sports a deliciously crunchy texture, cleansing acidity, savoury grip, and is somehow perfectly integrated with the wine's generous fruit giving a delicious sense of balance.

    Producer

“Pete [Schell] and his partner Magali Gely operate what I think is the best new-wave of small-scale Barossa wine companies to emerge at the beginning of the 21st century… These weren’t big, blockbuster, showy wines designed to impress. They were wines that managed to take the best of the Barossa’s sometimes forgotten varietal traditions and fuse them onto a very European flavour sensibility.” Max Allen, The Future Makers

    Region

Australia’s most famous wine region is known for many things. Gnarled, ancient bush-vines and big bold wines. The depth and concentration of its Shiraz, the perfume and line of its Grenache and the spice and meaty heft of its Mataro, or indeed a blend of all three and admired across the globe. But it is a region that is evolving. Sub-regional nuance is being explored and celebrated, alcohol and oak levels have retreated, alternative varieties have been embraced and wine styles span from the concentrated classics to natty numbers. In short; the Barossa is going through a renaissance and in the process, rediscovering itself and confidently paving its path into the future. 78% grenache, 22% cinsaut, the average vine age 90yo, open and closed fermenters with whole berry and whole bunches, 8-14 days on skins, matured in a mix of large-format old French oak, stainless steel and concrete tanks. Good colour; fresh and bright red berries; tannins are present, but you can't pin them down; good length to the finish.

Grenache and cinsault in the mix for 2018. Mostly grenache. From higher sites in the Spinfex coterie of vineyards, and, as is often the Spinifex motif, ‘picked earlier’.

Aromatic wine of high perfume, red cherry, touch of maraschino, some clove notes, touch of earthiness. The palate has a distinct crispness and crunch, red cherries, firm but fine web of tannins. It’s bright and vivacious but tells you who is boss. Drinkability is very high.
