This wine displays lifted dark fruit on the nose. The palate is tightly structured, displaying dark berries, sweet fruit and a hint of cedar oak. The finish is long with beautiful fine grained tannin. A wine that is approachable while young however it will reward cellaring for 3-6 years.

    Producer

The Thousand Candles vineyard and wines had an interesting birth several years ago and we were keen fans from day one. The team that was put together to farm this vineyard and make the wines was one of the best you could possibly conjure up with a blank cheque. They immediately got stuck in to restructuring and farming this poorly planned vineyard and the early wines were edgy and obscure yet wonderfully individual, drinkable and stimulating in their flavours, texture and weight.
After nearly a decade from their first release – Thousand Candles now has a range of brilliant wines from grapes perfectly suited to this site of huge potential, carefully crafted by Stuart Proud, one of the most highly regarded viticulturalists in Australia. With a passion and focus on soil health, the evolution into the winemaking role has been slow and steady. His farm management system has enabled him to not rely on herbicides, heavy pesticides and synthetic fertilisers to grow their grapes (and farm their cattle). They want a healthy and diverse system – not a sterile monoculture that exists in many mainstream, conventional vineyards.

The stunning Thousand Candles site at Gruyere in the Yarra Valley.

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc: a few of my favourite things.

It’s a beautiful thing to smell, and to drink, not least as a young wine. Plum, and forest berries, chocolate and sweet earth, almost a potpourri fragrance. Medium-bodied, soft and supple, all chocolate and hazelnuts (praline), so gentle and charming, no grating acidity, a sweep of sooty tannin tumbles down the plump berry and sweet tobacco finish. Turkish delight lingers in the aftertaste, and what a bloody delight it is too, from start to finish.

High density plantings of 50% merlot, 38% cabernet and 12% cabernet franc, matured separately for 7 months in used French oak. Good colour; the power and focus grow with each sip, although time is needed for the cassis/blackcurrant/mulberry and olive flavours to settle down, the tannins in particular. Interesting wine.
