This is handpicked Tempranillo from the clay/limestone soils around Haro. The youngest vines that make the grade here are 60 years old! The Reserva naturally ferments in cement vats and the wine is then aged for 19 months in mostly low-toast Radoux, French oak barriques (roughly one-third new). In recent vintages 10% of the wine has been raised in low-toast Caucasus oak, further lessening the wine's (already minimal) oak impact. Following aging in barrel, the wine was transferred back to concrete vats to settle for a further 24 months before release. Luis and Carmen find the wine clarifies so well in concrete that there is no need to fine or filter the wine before bottling. With a modern-classical profile combining freshness, elegance and depth, this is an outstanding, multi-layered and complex release from Valenciso. All class and without question one of the most sophisticated Temranillos being imported in to Australia.

    Producer

From the importer. At a dinner in Melbourne, circa 2012, Jesús Barquín, renowned Spanish wine writer and founder of the Equipo Navazos project, had a very clear message about Valenciso. He said this: “If you asked me to name just one producer from Rioja that you should buy, it would be Valenciso.” Enough said!
From humble beginnings, Valenciso have become a leading light amongst Rioja’s small, yet growing, band of micro, terroir-focused producers. The operation began in 1998 when Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso rented a small warehouse with barely enough space to produce their first vintage of 2,000 cases. Today, their key wine, a superb Rioja Reserva from mature vines of Tempranillo (averaging around 30-years-old and grown in the Rioja Alta), is widely considered to be one of the region’s benchmark reds.

    Region

La Rioja, in central Northern Spain is arguably the most famous Spanish region to international audiences. The region is known for blended strong red wines and with over 80 thousand hectares under vine is home to a very wide variety of producers. The most notable white varieties are Chardonnay and Macabeao, as for the reds - Tempranillo, Graciano and Grenache.

Valenciso's all-Tempranillo Reserva is drawn from 18 parcels on clay-limestone soils, all within a ten-kilometre radius of the winery in Ollauri. Showing the freshness, balance and precision that's a feature of the bodega's style, this is graceful, spicy and beautifully nuanced.
