Marsanne 59%, Roussanne 41%. Our white Rhône blend is a subtle wine that displays restraint and quiet power. It starts subdued, with hints of pear, honeysuckle, lanolin and quince. With air it expands, building depth and breadth, showing notes of honey, lemon and jasmine. On the palate, it’s both taut and well rounded, savoury and subtly pithy, but also spicy and gently viscous. It’s a fabulous food wine that manages to complement both delicate and more fully flavoured dishes and, unusually, satisfies both white and red wine drinkers. Full of promise, the 2016 is certainly enjoyable now, and will continue to evolve over a number of years.

    Producer

Guill de Pury grew up beside the out-of-operation 19th-century winery in Coldstream where a lack of interest in fine table wines had caused production to cease in 1921. In 1969, Guill and wife Katherine decided to replant the vineyard and start again, and gradually restored the reputation of this great Australian estate.
Guill has since handed over chief responsibility for the wines to daughter Sandra de Pury. Sandra initially worked as a chef in Hong Kong after previous experience in kitchens and a period of study in hotel management in Switzerland. She then enrolled in an MBA program at the university of Melbourne, during which she won a scholarship to the University of Chicago. This was followed by a five-year stint as a jet-setting problem-solver with a Melbourne-based management consultancy.
Eventually her family heritage caught up with her and she succumbed to the wine bug. She completed a degree in oenology on her way to becoming fourth-generation winemaker at Yeringberg, where she views her art as “the perfect combination of intellectual, physical and sensory engagement.".

    Region

First planted with vines in 1838, the Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry. It ceased production in the fortified wine boom in the 1920s and planting began again in earnest in the 1960s with modern pioneers such as Dr Bailey Carrodus, Guill de Pury and Dr John Middleton paving the way for the Yarra Valley to become one of Australia’s premier wine growing regions today. Their Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Mount Mary wineries remain regional heroes, firm favorites such as Coldstream Hills and new star wineries such as Oakridge and Giant Steps excel with stunning examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also no slouch in the region and the exciting new breed of wineries such as Bobar, Mac Forbes, Hoddles Creek, Salo, Timo Mayer, Thousand Candles and Proud Primary Produce are proof of the Yarra Valley’s diversity and understanding of place. Local Knowledge: The restaurant at Oakridge Wines is one of the finest regional dining experiences in the land…. Have a glass of 864 Chardonnay while you are there.

Yeringberg's Marsanne Roussanne blend is always an interesting expression of these varieties. This is an exemplary example. Indeed the word wonderful springs to mind. Power, grace, length, you name it. Honeysuckle, stonefruit, oak spice and meal. It’s excellent now but it has a higher gear in it; just give it a few more years.

An exotic nose showing spicy loquat, dried cloves, white peppers, sage, green apple ice cream and even some camembert. Full-bodied and very layered with pears and peach pith, which are really intensely flavored. Long and very spicy on the finish.
